Teach Your Children About Life With Interactive and Fun Games For Kids

There is nothing more beautiful then a child smiling, it's akin to the heavens opening and God saying, "You're a good parent, keep it up." If we're not careful however, those smiles can be few and far between since we live in a fast paced world and the days so quickly slip away.

Remember the Harry Chapin Song?

"Cats in the Cradle"

A child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."

We all have to bills to pay, jobs that demand our time, and deadline that were due yesterday (you've got to finish this today or the world will end.... believe me, planet Earth will keep on spinning).

No matter how busy we get, take the time love and interact with your kids.  There is one thing that can never be replaced and that is the time.  Like the proverbial "water under the bridge" once past, it is gone forever.  Make the most of those tender years and fertile minds with some fun games for kids.

It's not so important what the game is, its the fact you'll be spending quality time with your children; it might be one-on-one, possibly with a playmate, but the interaction between you and your child is priceless.  One of my distant but loving memories was time spent with my dad on a summer afternoon, we weren't doing much, simply tossing a Frisbee, but to this day I remember the sun on my shoulders and the smile on my dad's face.

Flash forward to my own kids, who seem addicted to video games (what's a dad (or mom) to do)?  Well remember, today's kids have never known anything except video games, it's as natural to them as lemonade on a hot summer day.

So don't try tearing them away, instead find out what interests your child, then mix in some fun and suddenly the whole family will be smiling over a fun kid's game.  It's not magic, just a parent and child creating a bond.

Here's the trick with video games (this probably won't work for teenagers, but mine are young), find a game that stimulates the mind and allows interaction.  If the game is for two and there's a playmate over, this is a perfect way to teach social interaction, "Now Jimmy, play nice, he's your friend".

If you visit Amazon and do a search for Toy & Games, you'll find over 466,000 results... wow daunting isn't it?  Don't worry it's easy to find which are the best, just do a "sort by Average Customer Review", and you'll immediately find the games that people (and kids) love.  Take the time to read some of the reviews, then choose one that lets your children have fun, as well as teaching their brains reasoning skills.  Hmmm, maybe I should get one for myself.

Next, (keeping your budget in mind), whip out the trusty debit card and your child's next game will be winging its way to your doorstep.  When it arrives (and it's up to you whether it's a surprise or not), make it an event to remember with cookies and milk, cake and ice-cream or something much more healthy.  The key factor is to enjoy your fun game for kids, when you do, so will your own child and their friends.

Time is a river flowing in only one direction; make sure to spend time with your children.

Ideas For Fun Games For Kids

There are so many kids products on the market it is sometimes overwhelming when trying to choose what would be the right game for your kids! Here are just a few of the many fun games for kids out there.

As an adult, I love the game Apples to Apples. It's simple and quick to learn and so much fun! Luckily, this game comes in a Junior version for kids! Wonderful! In fact many of the great games we love as adults come in a "junior" or "kids" version. That is the first place I would look, because if it's something you love, then most likely your kids will too! And as they get older they will know the games you play and can jump right in.

There are many other adult board games that come in a "kids" or "junior" version. Some fun games for kids to look for are Clue Jr., Boggle Jr., Pictionary Jr., Scrabble Jr. and Sequence for kids. If you have a board game you love, I would just Google the game title with "junior" or "kids" to see if there is a version for the younger crowd. You might be surprised by how many there are.

If you are looking for classic fun games for kids, there are plenty out there. Some that have stood the test of time are Sorry!, Guess Who?, Trouble, Connect 4, Uno, The Game of Life and Twister. These are all a blast to play, so its no wonder that they are still around.

Still not what you are looking for? Maybe you would like something more recent, or unique. In that case, you could go for the Cranium games for kids. There are several to choose from such as Cranium Cadoo, Cranium Whoonu?, Cranium Cariboo Island, and more! Even the names are fun. A great thing about the Cranium games is that there is usually something for everyone - trivia, drawing, charades, you name it!

Some other unique games for kids would be: Totally Gross The Game, You Gotta Be Kidding (The Would You Rather Game For Kids), Story Cubes, Hedbanz Game, or Scavenger Hunt For Kids. There are also a lot of games made from movies or TV as well, so if your child has a favorite, you could look for a game that goes along with that. For example, my niece loves Phineas and Ferb the cartoon. So if I Google "Phineas and Ferb board game" it came up with "Phineas and Ferb 104 Days of Summer Board Game". Perfect!

Summer Fun For Kids While on a Budget!

Summer can be an enjoyable time for parents and children while adhering to the family budget. By using a little creativity and some local community resources, summer can truly be an enriching and memorable time of the year. The local library is a great resource. Take a trip and chat with the librarian about upcoming age appropriate programs for children, many libraries offer play groups, story time, as well as provide entertainment, all for free!

Find out about special events provided through your community church for children. Many county park systems also have free events and programs during the summer months. Taking local nature walks provides a bonding time for parents and children. Spending time in nature is both therapeutic and fun! Keeping children active and fit is very important. Try taking bike rides, going swimming or for a light jog with your kids.

Come up with creative projects indoors on those steamy summer days. Assist your child in writing and illustrating their own book about their favorite summer activities. Invite friends over and help the children to organize skits and plays. For example, you can take a few cereal boxes, cans and personal care products and help the kids create their own commercials. They can make signs, and even a stage out of cardboard. Create puppets out of socks and allow the kids have a show with friends, what fun! Turn on some music and play games such as freeze dance, musical chairs or have a dance contest.

Get new age appropriate books bi-weekly on several topics of interest at the library. Books on tape and educational videos are great as well! Reading and summer crafts stimulate the mind. Get creative when it comes to summer arts and crafts projects. Kids can create various animals out of paper plates and yarn. They can turn the plates into masks and come up with more skits while sharing the masks with their friends. Craft supplies can be purchased at many local dollar stores. If your child is over 5, working with beads is a great project for developing fine motor skills. Also, during a nature walk, collect items in a brown bag to make a collage at home. You can label the natural items collected and have a discussion about it, as well as get a book on nature in the summertime. Puzzles, blocks and games are great for indoors too so stock up!

Volunteering in the community is a wonderful use of children's time in the summer. Many nursing home activity directors would love to have children come to their facility to brighten the lives of residents. Children can do simple crafts with seniors, draw pictures and read stories to them. The companionship children can provide for seniors is a true gift. Other volunteer opportunities may be available at area hospitals. Many times recreational therapists need assistance in craft projects designed to keep ill patients engaged. Most hospitals have volunteer coordinators to contact for opportunities for children and families.

Summer is a time for fun, creativity and community involvement. Use as many local resources as possible to ensure that this summer is one where your child stays active, happy and involved in a wealth of enriching activities.
